PEBBLE PUPS START THE NEW YEAR WITH A FIELD TRIP

By Steven Wade Veatch

The Pikes Peak Pebble Pups rang in the New Year with a field trip on Sunday, January 3, to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science for a behind-the-scenes look at the museum’s rock, mineral, and fossil collection. There were 17 Pebble Pups in attendance, 4 from the Lake George Gem and Mineral Club’s Pebble Pups and 13 from the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society’s Pebble Pups.

The trip was open to the Pebble Pup families, so there were moms, dads, brothers, and sisters as well.
Dr. James Hagadorn hosted the Pebble Pups and waived admission fees to the museum for this special group. Dr. Hagadorn led the group to areas the public never get to see. The group toured the new underground collection facilities. After the tour the Pebble Pups assembled for an exercise on the scientific method. After the tour the Pebble Pups had lunch at the T rex café and then toured the mineral and fossil halls at their own pace. Steven Veatch, chair of the Pikes Peak Pebble Pups, sets up this tour each year. Betty Merchant, program assistant, helped conduct the tour.

Welcome! This is the gateway to adventure and discovery

Through this blog pebble pups and junior members of the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society can access their lessons, work on assignments and projects, and receive details about field trips in the Pikes Peak Region. This Internet program is also suitable for young people who are interested in Earth science but do not live near a rock club or gem and mineral society or for young people anywhere who want a deeper dive into these topics. The only requirement is that all participants must be members of the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society and must fill out the CSMS membership form (under important websites) and send their registration and membership fee in. Steven Veatch is the senior instructor and will need an email from you with your name, address, phone number, and permission from your parents to participate in this program.
